Nearly one-hundred first generation college students travelled to Tallahassee on March 31, 2009 to meet with members of the Florida Legislature and state education leaders to share their stories on how they overcame systemic barriers to become the first in their family to attend college. Traveling from all across Florida, students hand-delivered My Story- a collection of student essays that capture real accounts and challenges students in Florida face as they aspire to achieve academically while overcoming societal and systemic barriers. Students shared recommendations on how Florida’s public education system can be improved to minimize barriers for students following in their footsteps.
