Anita Herrera’s leadership in FCAN’s statewide initiatives – Apply Yourself Florida, Florida FAFSA Challenge, College Decision Day, and Plan It Florida – has created a comprehensive support system that guides students and families from ninth grade through graduation. Serving as Assistant Director of High School Tutor Corps at the Guadalupe Center, her commitment to college and career readiness earned her recognition at the Talent Strong Florida Summit as the 2026 College Ready Florida Innovator.
Beginning in students’ junior year, Anita works to develop personalized college lists based on academics, career interests, and personal goals while supporting Apply Yourself Florida efforts. She teaches students how to research universities and evaluate majors while also providing essay workshops, application support, and weekly check-ins to ensure students stay on track. She coordinates college admissions visits, prepares students to engage with representatives, and arranges transportation and meals for college and career events.
Through Plan It Florida, Anita supports long-term college and career readiness beginning in ninth grade. Students complete annual career interest inventories, participate in career exploration activities, and engage with employers. Juniors participate in ACT and SAT preparation and attend college tours across Florida, while summer pre-college programs allow students to experience campus life and explore careers aligned with their interests.
Anita also leads extensive FAFSA support efforts for both students and families in coordination with the Florida FAFSA Challenge. She introduces FAFSA awareness during junior year and hosts multiple FAFSA nights throughout the school year to provide hands-on guidance and individualized assistance for families. Her approach empowers families to confidently navigate the college funding process.
Anita also celebrates student achievements through College Decision Day, where seniors are recognized for their college, university, or career and technical education plans. Through celebration dinners, college shirts, photo shoots, and campus displays, she fosters a culture of pride and opportunity for future graduating classes.
Her work continues to transform the lives of students and families by expanding opportunities and creating a strong college-going culture.
