FCAN Student Fellowship

Overview

Founded in 2021, the FCAN Student Fellowship trains students to advocate for the policies that affect their education.

The program includes virtual sessions on dual enrollment, FAFSA, financial aid, and other policy areas that shape students’ paths beyond high school.

After completing the sessions, fellows work in mentor-led groups. During legislative session, they travel to Tallahassee to advocate directly to lawmakers. The program’s goal: inform lawmakers on policies that build a Talent Strong Florida and advance Florida’s SAIL to 60 goal, in which 60% of working-age Floridians hold a degree or credential beyond high school by 2030.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fellows compensated?

Upon successful completion of the program, including submission of student stories, participants who are able to fill out a form W-9 are eligible to receive a $1,000 stipend.

Can I participate if I am unable to attend one of the virtual sessions or cannot attend the Tallahassee trip?

Full participation is expected from fellows as each session builds upon the previous and missing a session may disrupt the student’s and their team’s progress. Extenuating circumstances should be communicated as soon as possible to the program lead for consideration.

How does transportation in Tallahassee work? Is lodging provided?

Students are expected to arrange their transportation to and from Tallahassee. FCAN will reimburse allowable transportation expenses according to state travel protocols. Hotel accommodations are provided directly, and are single-occupancy.

Is this program open to all majors?
