Florida College Access Network (FCAN) has selected 11 students to participate in the fourth annual Advocacy Fellowship. Since 2021, FCAN has worked closely with its network leaders to elevate and support student voices through the fellowship’s key objectives. Last year’s fellows traveled to Tallahassee to participate in two days of advocacy at Florida’s State Capitol.
The 2024-25 cohort, which began in November, provides students with the opportunity to build their advocacy and storytelling skills by joining monthly meetings, engaging with local leaders, and attending FCAN’s Advocacy Days in Tallahassee scheduled for March 2025. This event provides students with the chance to discuss education policies with elected officials.
Four leaders affiliated with local college access networks will offer guidance and mentorship to the students. This collaborative work aims to prepare the fellows, not only for FCAN’s Advocacy Days, but also with their postsecondary education and future careers.
“The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for students and local communities to work together in driving meaningful change while sharing their stories,” said Sarah Foster, policy analyst for FCAN. “As we work toward a Talent Strong Florida, it’s essential to continue advocating for students statewide and supporting them on their postsecondary journey.”
FCAN advocates for policies that will lead Florida to achieve our SAIL to 60 Goal to increase the percentage of Floridians, ages 25-64, with a high-value postsecondary certificate, degree, or training experience to 60% by 2030. Currently, Florida stands at 55.1%.
Based on timely research and stakeholder engagement, FCAN supports the following policy priorities for 2025 and beyond:
- Supporting FAFSA Awareness in Financial Literacy Course Curriculum
- Expanding Access to the Florida Student Assistance Grant
- Continuing to Leverage Dual Enrollment Opportunities
