The 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened Sept. 23, 2026, the earliest launch in the program’s history. The early start gives Florida students and families more time to complete the application, plan for education after high school and learn sooner what financial aid they qualify for.
The U.S. Department of Education also changed the form this year. The 2027-28 FAFSA uses clearer language and lets students invite parents or other contributors by text message or email. A simpler renewal process, expected later this fall, will prepopulate returning students’ answers from their prior-year FAFSA. The changes build on improvements from the previous cycle and are meant to make the form easier to finish, so more students can get aid for education after high school.
What Do Florida’s Early Numbers Tell Us?
As of Oct. 16, 25,021 Florida high school seniors had completed the 2027-28 FAFSA, up 0.7% from 24,853 at the same point last year.
Last year’s form opened Sept. 24, one day later, so the two cycles line up almost exactly. So far, Florida seniors are completing the FAFSA at about the same pace as last year’s class. Early completion matters because it gives students more time to understand their aid options, meet college and state deadlines and make informed decisions about their plans after high school
How to Use the First-Look FAFSA Dashboard
The First-Look FAFSA Dashboard, built by the Florida College Access Network (FCAN), tracks weekly FAFSA submissions and completions for Florida’s high school class of 2027.
Users can view data for more than 600 public high schools, all 67 counties and Florida House and Senate districts. Filters and search tools let users:
- Track weekly FAFSA submissions and completions.
- Compare this year’s progress with the same period last year.
- See how schools, counties and legislative districts differ.
- Watch week-over-week changes to see where outreach may need more attention.
A note about completion rates: The First-Look FAFSA Dashboard reports the number of completed FAFSAs, not completion rates. When senior enrollment figures are released, typically in January, FCAN will add completion rates so users can compare schools and districts of different sizes.
