FCAN is once again offering an early glimpse at some of the best practices and fresh approaches for supporting students toward education beyond high school that you can expect to hear at the 2023 Talent Strong Florida Summit.

We are excited to bring back our Summit Speaker Series podcast, a collection of brief interviews on the Florida College Access Network Podcast. The series gives a select group of speakers and presenters the opportunity to share a sneak peek at their sessions prior to the summit, which is set for April 27-28 at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay.

“There are a lot of wraparound affordability challenges that are tied with housing, which means that when students are struggling academically — or even doing fine while carrying a (financial) burden — everything gets amplified in terms of stress.”

One of our breakout sessions — “Rent-Free Housing, Mental Wellness, and a Randomized Control Trial Study” — will highlight the work of Southern Scholarship Foundation, which supports students who lack financial resources and demonstrate academic merit through rent-free housing and cooperative living. Seeking an external, rigorous perspective on decades-old housing and food intervention for students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, five cohorts of students were randomized into scholarship (treatment) or no scholarship (control) conditions, and then followed over time using multiple methodologies.

In the latest episode of the Summit Speaker Series, Dr. Shawn Woodin, President and CEO of Southern Scholarship Foundation, and Lara Perez-Felkner, Associate Professor of Higher Education and Sociology, Florida State University, preview their session and discuss the connection between food/housing insecurity and mental health.

The 2023 Talent Strong Florida Summit will feature nearly 40 sessions connected to FCAN’s Seven Conditions That Create a Resilient Workforce and Spark Economic Mobility. The theme of this year’s summit — “Engage & Empower” — emphasizes the critical role of mental health and inclusivity in college and career readiness
