Unlocking Opportunity in DeSoto County: Education for a Thriving Future
Who We Are
The DeSoto Local College Access Network (LCAN), led by United Way Suncoast, is a cross-sector partnership committed to increasing college and career success in DeSoto County. Our mission is to ensure every student can access and complete education beyond high school that leads to a rewarding career.
What We Do
We bring together schools, colleges, employers, libraries, nonprofits, and community organizations to help students navigate the journey from classroom to career.
DeSoto LCAN is committed to increasing college readiness, enrollment, and completion by aligning with FCAN’s Talent Strong Florida campaign. With a shared goal of increasing FAFSA completion to at least 40% by next year, DeSoto LCAN is moving toward a future where every student can pursue a path to prosperity.
Why It Matters
DeSoto County’s community of 34,719 residents has one high school and only 16.7% of adults hold a credential or degree, ranking it among the lowest in the state for postsecondary attainment. Nearly 1 in 3 residents are Spanish speakers, and 16% live below the poverty line. These factors make equitable access to education especially critical. Communities like DeSoto benefit when more students pursue education after high school—whether at a college, university, or technical program. Research shows that increasing credential attainment not only boosts individual earning potential, but also strengthens the local economy and contributes to a more resilient, prosperous community.
How We Make an Impact
Through coordinated outreach, engaging workshops, strategic marketing, and trusted partnerships, we support students and families at every step. Our key initiatives include:
- FAFSA Completion Events: Held at local schools and community centers while also leveraging the support of peer influencers.
- Year-Round Outreach: Messaging campaigns, social media, and parent info sessions that break down barriers and bust FAFSA myths.
- Data-Informed Strategy: Using real-time FAFSA and enrollment data to drive decisions, measure progress, and fill service gaps.
- Collaborative Network: An asset map of more than a dozen partner organizations—including DeSoto County Education Foundation, Links2Success, South Florida State College, and the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce who are working together to elevate student success. DeSoto LCAN continues to actively seek partnerships with local employers, financial institutions to maintain a collaborative approach in this work.
- Student Engagement: Develop ongoing communication with students to understand the challenges and barriers they face when trying to attain a postsecondary education.
